Willie attended Sunset High School where he graduated in 1940 as President of his class. Upon graduation from SLI ULL with a degree in Mechanical Engineering he entered the Merchant Marines with the rank of LTJG where he had some exciting wartime experiences and served with honor from 19441947 in the South Pacific Theater.
Willie dedicated his life to family, church and community and was noted to be a pillar of his community. He was a respected business man working for over 40 years in the family business, F. S. Barry Insurance Agency in Sunset. Willie participated in many business and community related organizations and he volunteered his time and talents to many causes over the years. He was strong supporter of St. Charles Catholic Church all of his life, beginning with serving as an altar boy for ten years, then as a lector for most of his adulthood and as a trustee for 22 years. The Bank of Sunset was near and dear to Willies heart and he proudly served 50 years as a member of the Board of Directors. In 1995, Willie and his wife, Ada, were the recipients of the Sertoma Clubs Service to Mankind Award.
In his early years Willie was quite the baseball and softball player and excelled in track and field events while in college. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing golf, camping, growing vegetables, grafting new varieties of pecans and spending time with family and friends. If not doing one of these activities Willie could probably be found on his beloved tractor, Lucy. With his quick wit and remarkable sense of humor, Willie was always the life of the party and made a lasting impression wherever he went. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who knew and loved him. He was a devoted husband, father and friend and his influence, wisdom and love will live on in their hearts forever.
