Walter Wally Phythian, Jr.

Opelousas Funeral services for Mr. Walter Wally Phythian, Jr., 66, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.

Father Paul Bienvenu will celebrate the Mass. The Readers for the Mass will be Nancy Thibodeaux and Debbie Speyrer. The gifts will be presented by Taryn Phythian, Kayla Driscole, Megan Driscole, Kathryn Phythian, Lillian Phythian, Jacob Cade Cooper, Anthony Kyle Tyler, and Karen Wimberly. The Eulogy will be read by Jay Micheal Phythian.

Mr. Wally was born October 3, 1941, in Tyler, Texas; and was a resident of Opelousas. He passed from life on Sunday, September 21, 2008, in the Opelousas General Health System.

Wally graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Sam Houston State University and a Masters of Education from McNeese State University. He was a member of the Louisiana Association of Educators, where he taughtcoached for 23 years in addition to his 5 years of teachingcoaching in Texas. He served as teacher, Assistant Principal and Principal of Opelousas Junior High from 1971-2003. Most recently, he was honored to have served as Principal of S. L. A. T. S. in St. Landry Parish. In addition to teaching, he managed Port Barre Rental Tools and other oilfield related companies.

Wally loved three things in life: his family, his friends, and profession. All of those things brought him much joy. He dedicated his life to building character in all of his children students included. He thoroughly enjoyed fishing, especially with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Sharron J. Phythian of Opelousas; his mother, Clara Sue Phythian of Crockett, TX; four children: Walt Wendy Phythian of Opelousas; Stephanie Driscole of Denton, TX; Charlie Missy of Lumberton, TX; and Edna Tammy Phythian of Frisco, TX; eight grandchildren: Taryn Phythian, Megan Driscole, Jacob Cade Cooper, Kayla Driscole, Anthony Kyle Tyler, Garrett Phythian, Kathryn Phythian, and Lillian Phythian; five siblings: Susie Russell, Michael Phythian, Phoebe Bridges, Jim Phythian, and John Phythian, all of Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Wally was preceded in death by his father, Walter R. Phythian, Sr.

Pallbearers will be Max Botts, Steven Schiesler, G. Micheal Ortego, John Phythian, Jackson Bridges, Carl Hubble, John Murphy, and Dan Schiesler. Honorary pallbearers will be Garrett Wade Phythian, James Edward Phythian, Sr., Jay Micheal Phythian, and James Clifton Jones.

Visiting hours will be observed on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Wednesday, visitation will continue in the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. until the time of services.

A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening in the funeral home.
