Vera Ruth Gilmore
Opelousas - Funeral Services for Vera Ruth Gilmore will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015, at LA Memorial United Methodist Church in Opelousas. Interment will follow at the Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas. Rev. Jean Sanders will conduct the Funeral Service.
Ms. Vera was a native and longtime resident of Opelousas. She passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at her residence in Opelousas at the age of 88. Ms. Vera was a faithful member of the LA Memorial United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary for many years, was one of the founding members of the Annual Church Bazar, she was a volunteer at Opelousas General Health System, and taught English at Opelousas High School. She was very active in numerous clubs in Opelousas, active in the PTA at Opelousas High School and the Mother's club at the Academy Of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. She was a graduate of Opelousas High School and Southwestern La. Institute (now UL). She also worked with the Social Security Administration in Opelousas but the most rewarding achievements were being a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Ms. Vera is going to be missed by all that knew and loved her.
Survivors include her daughters, Cheryl Ruth Gilmore of Lafayette; Carla G. Schultz of Opelousas, brothers, R.P. Walker and wife Myrna of Lafayette, T. Herb Walker and wife Sandra of Opelousas; step-brother, Charlie McKinney of Opelousas; grandchildren, Jason Gilmore Schultz and wife Katie of Crowley and Meghan Schultz Dendy and husband Brian of Bournemouth, England.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Gilmore; parents, Charles and Julia Ethel Walker Bourque, Jr., Robert Walker, Sr. and Elmira Dufilho; son-in-law, Donald Schultz.
The visitation will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. until time of Service at 2:00 p.m. at La Memorial United Methodist Church on Bellevue St. in Opelousas, LA.
Family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Gary Blanchard and her faithful care givers; Clairenet Chenier, Mary Sam, Velma Coleman and Rose Hodges for the wonderful care and love shown to Ms. Vera.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to LA Memorial United Methodist Church, Opelousas Area Cerebral Palsy Center or a Charity of your choice in memory of Ms. Vera.
