Mr. Sonnier was a lifelong resident of Opelousas. He died at 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2008 in the Opelousas General Health System following a short illness with cancer.

Mr. Sonnier attended Opelousas Developmental Center now AESO since 1990. Terry enjoyed working in the AESO Woodshop Department, interacting with and supplying local and regional industries. He also performed janitorial services throughout the community as a member of the Janitorial Program Mobile Crew. Terry excelled in the Special Olympics games in sports such as volleyball, track field, softball throw, fifty-meter dash, bowling and also horseshoes. His participation in Special Olympics took his Horseshoe tossing team to Regional and State competition. His acceleration in the fifty-meter dash permitted him to become the first O.D.C. athlete to be eligible to participate in the 2006 National Games in Des Moines, Iowa. Terry was also selected to light the torch at Acadiana Area Games, and recently recited the Special Olympics oath at the State Fall Classic. Recently, Terry continued to participate in less strenuous sports that showed his passion for the game.

Terry will continue to be greatly missed by the staff and co-workers who found his smile and determination to be a source of strength and inspiration to all who knew him.
