Sr. Mary Zita Guidry, MSC

Opelousas Funeral services for Sr. Mary Zita Guidry, MSC, 84, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 12, 2007, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Landry Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas.

Father Joe Breaux will conduct the services.

Sr. Zita was a native of Egan, LA, and resident of Opelousas, LA. She died at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2007, in the Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas.

Sr. Zita entered the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1937. She was an elementary School teacher. She taught at St. Cecilia, St. Mary of the Angels, St. Julian Eymard, Sts. Peter Paul, St. Rita, Holy name of Mary and Resurrection Schools in New Orleans, LA. She also taught at St. Basil in Plaquemine, LA; St. Francis in Houma, LA; Sacred Heart in Morgan City, LA; Immaculate Conception Opelousas Catholic in Opelousas, LA; St. Alphonsus in Ocean Springs, MS; and Sacred Heart in Ville Platte, LA. She served as Dietary Supervisor at Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent in New Orleans, LA. Sister was involved in Pastoral Care work in Resurrection Parish in New Orleans, LA; and at C'est La Vie Independent Living Center for seniors in Opelousas, LA.

Survivors include: one brother, Irvine Guidry of Jennings, LA; and one sister, Marguerite Evans of Liberty, TX. She also has a host of nieces and nephews.

Sr. Zita was preceded in death by her parents: Laurent and Clementine Courville Guidry; five brothers: Howard, Vilmond, Abraham, Wilfred, and Leroy Guidry; and five sisters: Alice Sensat, Laurence Sensat, Hazel Broussard, Hilda Guidry, Gladys Dewitt, Anna Belle Smith and Shirley Kennair.
