Sister Mary Genevieve Gitz

Opelousas Funeral services for Sister Mary Genevieve Gitz, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, in the Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel in Algiers, LA. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum in Algiers, LA.

Father Tony will conduct the services.

Sr. Gitz, a native of New Orleans and resident of Opelousas, died at 11:50 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2006, in the Opelousas General Health System.

Sister entered the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1934 and has been a Marianite for 73 years. She ministered as a teacher, music teacher and choral director in elementary and secondary education at St. John School in Plaquemine, LA; Sacred Heart School in Morgan City, LA; Sacred Heart School in Ville Platte, LA; and at Incarnate Word School and Academy of Holy Angels in New Orleans, LA. Sister also served as principal of Sacred Heart School in Ville Platte, LA.

Sister Mary Genevieve also served in leadership as a Provincial Councilor, Provincial Treasurer, and Local Superior for many years. For over twenty years, she served as Business Manager for Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans, LA. In 2004, Sister retired to St. Joseph Convent in New Orleans and then moved to a ministry of prayer at Prompt Succor Convent in 2005 and Prompt Succor Nursing Facility in 2006, both in Opelousas, LA.

Survivors include two sisters: Lorraine Stennett of Dallas, TX; and Marynell Madere of New Orleans, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Louis Alvin Gitz and Mathilda Leininger Gitz.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, from noon until 2:00 p.m. in the Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel in Algiers.

In lieu of flowers, the Marianites of Holy Cross request that donations may be made to the Marianite Retirement Fund at 1011 Gallier Street, New Orleans, LA 70117.
