Sr. Colette Guidry was born Christelle Guidry in Hayes, Louisiana on January 24, 1922.
Deceased at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 10:15 AM surrounded by her Marianite Sisters.
She was preceded in death by her father, Felix Guidry, and her mother, Edmonia Primeaux from Lacasseine, LA. She was also preceded in death by her five brothers, Lawrence, Clarence, Duffy, Edgar, and Huey Guidry and four sisters, Henriette Guidry, Ella Theriot, Nita Trahan, and Jennie Broussard.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Sr. Colette entered the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1937. She pronounced her perpetual vows on December 31, 1943.
Sister held a degree in Home Economics from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas and was involved in education at all levels teaching in New Orleans at Holy Name of Mary, Sts. Peter Paul, St. Rita, St. Mary of the Angels in Gretna at Archbishop Blenk High School in Plaquemine at St. Basil in Ville Platte at Sacred Heart in Houma at St. Francis de Sales in Franklin at St. John in Lake Charles at St. Charles Academy, Immaculate Conception and St. Louis High School. Touching back to her family French heritage, in 197273, Sister studied French at the Sorbonne in Paris in the CODOFIL program. Subsequently, she taught French at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans, LA.
After completing theology studies at St. Thomas University in Houston, Texas in 1981, she ministered as Director of Religious Education at St. Ann Parish in Beaumont, Texas for fifteen years.
In addition to her educational expertise in many areas, Sr. Colette was an excellent seamstress. Her students and friends alike attest to her extraordinary talent with fabric, needle and thread. Sisters retirement years were spent in community service and ministry of prayer at the Prompt Succor Convent. Since February 2007, she was a resident at Prompt Succor Nursing Home where she continued to share her gifts of listening as well as storytelling, her wit and wisdom with staff, residents and family members
A lifelong learner, her shelves held her cherished books and her typewriter was always close by to make notes and write letters. In addition, all through her life, she loved music. Even in her final days, the music she loved played by her bedside and her Marianite Sisters kept vigil with her as she made her final journey home to the Lord.
A wake service will be held on April 27th from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home at 10:30 AM with burial in St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas, LA.
In lieu of flowers, the Marianites of Holy Cross request that donations be made to the Marianite Retirement Fund at 1011 Gallier St., New Orleans, LA 70117.
