Sr. Germaine Buckingham, MSC

Opelousas Sr. Germaine Buckingham, MSC was born Margie Buckingham on December 11, 1921 in Lake Arthur, La. She died peacefully at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Prompt succor Nursing Home on November, 19, 2011 having lived 89 years.

Sr. Germaine was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Reimers and her father, Guy Buckingham. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, G.A. Buckingham and J. L. Buckingham. She is survived by four nephews: David Buckingham of Los Angeles, CA, Brian Buckingham of Prescott, AZ., Lawrence Guy Buckingham of New Orleans, La., and Stephen Buckingham of San Francisco, CA.

She entered the Marianites of Holy Cross on September 8, 1936, pronounced her first vows August 10, 1938 and her perpetual vows on August 11, 1943. After completing her undergraduate degree from Our Lady of Holy Cross College, she attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, TX where she received her masters degree in education. She served in the educational field as a teacher and administrator. She taught at St. Mary of the Angels, Sts. Peter and Paul, St Rita, Holy Name of Mary, Incarnate Word, St. Agnes and St. Andrew in New Orleans, La. She also taught at St. John in Plaquemine, St. Edmund in Eunice, Sacred Heart in Ville Platte, and St. John in Franklin. She served as principal at Incarnate Word in New Orleans, La. and Sacred Heart in Morgan City, La. Sister Germaine served on the faculty and in Student Support Service at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans, La.

Ever faithful in her dedication to the Marianites, to her family and friends, she is lovingly remembered as being hospitable, caring and one who loved to cook, sing and entertain, all of which endeared her to the many lives she touched and inspired through the years.

Visitation will be at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home Chapel on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., followed by the Mass of Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home Father Bart will officate at the Mass. Burial will be in St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas, La. May she rest in the peace and joy of the Lord.
