Sister Bridget Phelan MSC AKA Mary Phelan
Opelousas Sister Bridget Phelan, MSC AKA Mary Phelan was born November 14, 1913 in Tipperary, Ireland. She died at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas, LA on Wednesday, January 18, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Phelan, and her mother, Mary Fitzgerald Phelan and three sisters: Catherine Coleman, Bridget Ryan, Sr. Ita Phelan and brothers, John Patrick Phelan and John Phelan.
She is survived by one sister, Sr. Finbarr Phelan, and nieces and nephews.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross in Shreveport in 1933 and transferred to the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross in New Orleans in 1997.
As an educator, Sr. Bridget taught at St. Mary, St. Vincent Academy, St. John, St. Catherine and St. Theresa in Shreveport at Sacred Heart in Moreauville at St. Patrick in Lake Providence at St. Matthew, Jesus the Good Shepherd, and St. Frederick in Monore, Louisiana.
Sr. Bridget was an avid sports fan. Althought she followed most sports, football was her favorite and she cheered on the Saints, the LSU Tigers and the Fightin Irish on many occasions. In her younger years, she helped organize and coach an elementary team.
Her last years were spent in Opelousas at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home.
A wake service will be held at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home Chapel from 8:3010:00 AM on Friday, January 20, 2012 followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 AM.
Burial will be in St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas.
