Shawn King DeJean
July 8, 1955 - February 17, 2017
Shawn passed away at the age of 61 on Friday, February 17 in Lafayette, LA from complications due to a stroke. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at St. Landry Catholic Church at 1:00 p.m. Msgr Louis Melancon will celebrate the Mass. Interment will be held at a later day and be private for the family only.
He was born in Opelousas, LA and was the third of six children. The death of his parents at a young age gave him the will to become self-sufficient as just a teenager. He became a successful entrepreneur starting with opening his own welding business, then building Opelousas Concrete over 20 years, and then working to develop seven residential subdivisions with his business, DeJean Development. He was fearless in the face of adversity, and will be remembered for not only his unwavering courage, but for his kindness, generosity and devotion to his family and friends.
Shawn was a lifelong sportsman and found his greatest joy when he was hunting and fishing, especially with his son. He loved to have fun in the outdoors, whether it was playing golf with his friends, boating, riding horses or clearing land on his bulldozer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, former State Representative H.B. DeJean, Jr. and Katherine Carlisle DeJean, and his sister, Vita Katherine DeJean Hafeli. He will be dearly missed by his children, H.B. DeJean III and Suzanne DeJean Jones, and his siblings, Kyle DeJean, Susan DeJean Lafleur, Julie DeJean Marks and Dr. Bill DeJean.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. A Rosary Service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. and will be conducted by Deacon Sammy Diesi.
