Sgt. Major Leroy Sanders, Ret.

Leonville, La Funeral services for Mr. Leroy Sanders, age 77, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2007, in the St. Leo Catholic Church in Leonville. Interment will follow in the St. Leo Mausoleum.

Rev. Ken Dominque will officiate the services.

Mr. Sanders was a native of Arnaudville and long-time resident of Leonville. He died on Sunday, December 5, 2007, in his home at 8:45 a.m. Sgt. Major Sanders served his Nation in the US Army by serving 4 tours of duty in Korea, 3 tours in Germany, 2 years in England and also as a recruiter in Opelousas, La. Sgt. Major received the Commendation Ribbon WMetal and the Meritorious Service Medal on 2 occasions. He served his basic training at Camp Chaffee, Ark. and then transferred to El Paso,Texas, Fort Bliss; and then on to Fort Sheridan, Ill. Sgt. Major Sanders next great passion after he retired was hunting, fishing, bowling and gardening. Mr. Sanders loved planting flowers especially Roses and Tulips. He always wanted his yard cut, trimmed and neat. The next great passion was helping his wife to cook. Sgt. Major Sanders during his retirement was a member of the Jules B. Jeanmard Assembly 326 Opelousas Council serving as a 4th Degree Knight and also was a life Honorary Member. He was a member of the VFW Post 5153 of Arnaudville and the American Legion Past Commander, Post 0278 in Leonville. Sgt. Major was also the Past 7th District Adjutant and a member of the Sergeants Major Association.

Survivors include his wife, Leatrice Badeaux Sanders of Leonville; brothers, Harry Sanders of Arnaudville, Allen Sanders of Lafayette, Howard Sanders of Cecilia, Raymond Sanders of Henderson, and Wilbert Sanders of Arnaudville; a sister, Mary Picard of Breaux Bridge.

Mr. Sanders was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Clement Stelly Sanders.

Visiting hours will be observed on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, in the St. Leo Church Hall in Leonville beginning at 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., the hall will reopen at 8:00 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday.
