Opelousas A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Lawtell for Mr. Rufus Antoine Robert. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park. Rev. Ted Broussard will celebrate the Mass.
Rufus was a native of Rayne and a resident of Lawtell, LA. He passed away on Friday, September 27, 2013, at Opelousas General Health System at the age of 91. He retired after working 28 years for Port Arthur Towing Co. transporting tugboat crews from different locations.
He was a U. S. Army Veteran who proudly served his country during WWII. He was part of the Reconnaissance Company 818 Tank Destroyer Battalion. He served in NaplesFoggia, RomeArno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Some of his honors include the following: EAMETO MED, AGCM, and BRONZE INDIAN ARROWHEAD.
He was a great family man who enjoyed cooking and spending time with the family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His favorite pastime was being outdoors camping, gardening, and taking care of the animals.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mabel Noel Robert of Lawtell three children, Catherine Deville and husband, Bill of Carencro Susan Champeaux and husband, Dean of Vidor, TX and Julie Smith and companion, Jason Guidroz of Port Barre five brothers, Murphy Robert of Groves, TX Vernice Robert of Port Arthur, TX John Robert of Jasper, TX Wilton Robert of Sulphur and Wilbert Robert of Carencro two sisters, Ruth Robert Noel of Lawtell and Brenda Robert Boutte of Virginia nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert and Rita Thibodeaux Robert five brothers, Irving Robert, Alton Robert, Howard Robert, Jesse Robert, and Ronald Jean Robert and one sister, Dorothy Ortego.
Pallbearers will be Andy Deville, Tony Deville, Chad Champeaux, Smith, Wilbert Robert, Wilton Robert, and Chase Menard.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Sunday, September 29, 2013, from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Monday, visitation will continue from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday evening in the funeral home.
