Port BarreFuneral Services for Mr. Roy Dwayne Council, age 79, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014, with a celebration of his life at the First Baptist Church in Port Barre. Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Port Barre. Pastor Benji Richard will officiate the service. Military funeral honors will follow in the cemetery.
Roy was a longtime resident of Port Barre. He passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jennings. After 79 years with us, Roy Council went Home to once again be with his wife of 57 years, parents and siblings whom have been waiting to welcome him into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Mr. Council served as the Honorable Mayor of Port Barre from 19811985. He was a decorated veteran of the U. S. Navy who proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict and just recently received the Louisiana Medal of Honor. He was also a past member of the American Legion Post 334 of Port Barre. He was a multitalented musician and devoted much of his life to serving others through community activities such as coaching baseball for many years.
He is survived by his three children. He leaves his children to cherish his memory: Roy Donald Council and wife, Eva Jimmie Council, and Sandra Armand and husband, John who are all from Port Barre. He took great pleasure in his grandchildren which include: Shane Council and wife, Heather, Brady Council and wife, Courtney Jeremy Council, Darius Council and wife, Claire Julie Patin and husband, Joshua Derrick Armand and wife, Michelle Willis Armand, and Wendy Armand. The special little ones in his life included greatgrandchildren: Lauren Council, Anna Council, Lindsay Council, Kolby Council, Iley Armand, Madison Patin, and Katie Council. He was also survived by two sisters, Margaret Butler of Willis Point, TX and Lou Jackson of Houston, TX.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Velma Mae Scruggins Council his parents, Roy D. Council and Essie Edwards Council three sisters and four brothers.
His beloved grandsons and soninlaw will serve as pallbearers.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Port Barre on Thursday, October 9, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. On Friday, visitation will continue from 7:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
