A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday July 16, 2017 at St. Landry Catholic Church of Opelousas for Robert Hart "Buddy" Littell, 91 who died 8:11 a.m. Thursday July 13, 2017 at Lafayette General Medical Center.
The Rev. Joe Breaux, Msgr. Louis Melancon, and Deacon Dwayne Joubert will be officiate at the Funeral Mass.
Entombment will be in the Littell Family Plot at Myrtle Grove Cemetery in Opelousas.
Buddy was born in Opelousas, Louisiana on May 16, 1926 to Robert Hart Littell, Sr. and Camille Scolfield Littell. He was a graduate of Cathedral Carmel High School in Lafayette and attended SLI (UL). Buddy went on to join the U. S. Navy and proudly served his country in the Pacific aboard the USS Eagle 23. For many years, Buddy served as a Regional Director for Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company and was a recipient Colonial Hall of Fame Award. He was also a past owner of Acadian Petroleum Tools of Youngsville.
Buddy was a devout Catholic and had a devotion to the Blessed Mother. He was a past resident of Opelousas and was a member of St. Landry Catholic Church where he served for many years as a Lector. Upon retirement, Buddy relocated to his much loved "Lake House" at False River in Oscar, Louisiana. There, he became a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lakeland where he was a member of the church choir and was a Eucharistic Minister. Buddy had many wonderful friends at the lake and was affectionately known by all as the "Mayor of Oscar".
Preceding Buddy in death are his parents, his wife of 60 years Yvonne "Poulette" LeBlanc Littell and two sisters, Camille Littell Burch & Beryl Littell Beaullieu.
Buddy is survived by seven children; Dianne "Dee" Littell Daigle & husband Bill of Lafayette; Bernard Hart Littell, Sr. & wife Trista of Youngsville; Laura Littell Dupre & husband David of Opelousas; Dr. Richard "Rick" Littell & wife Lisa of Covington; Charles D. Littell & wife Alison of Salina, Kansas; Robert Michael Littell of Youngsville; and Cathy Littell McKinney & husband David of Lafayette. He is also survived by two sisters Janice Littell Howard and Carolyn Littell Gardiner, both of Lafayette; twelve Grandchildren; twenty-five Great-Grandchildren; and his canine companion Maria Carmella "Mel" Littell.
Buddy will be remembered for his quick wit and remarkable sense of humor. His entertaining stories, "Buddyisms" will live on forever!
The family wishes to acknowledge with gratitude the love and support of Buddy's care givers Norbert Lee and Verna White. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Mitchell Dugas, his staff and the many wonderful medical professionals at Lafayette General Medical Center and Pointe Coupee General.
Pallbearers will be Grandsons Hart Littell, Sam Littell, Will Daigle, Chris Gerald, Nick Gerald, and Zack Littell.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Steve Searcy, Grover Dunphy, Herman Jack, Jerry Wetzel, John Schwabb, Ronnie May, and Norbert Lee.
Visiting hours are to be observed from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm on Saturday, July 15, and from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Sunday July 16. A rosary will be recited by Daughter-in-Law Trista Miller Littell at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.
