Opelousas Reflection of life service for Richard Griffin, age 73, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, Interment will follow in Bellevue Memorial Park.
Richard was born in Opelousas, La. on October 26, 1938 to Hinton Turner Griffin and Helen Mildred Cuz Sandoz Griffin and he left on February 26, 2012, at the age of 73.
He attended school in Opelousas and graduated from high school at East Jefferson High in 1957 in Metairie, La. He graduated from Junior College at Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama in 1960, where he won national honors as an All American football player. He then received his degree in Economics from S.L.I now ULL in 1962. He owned and operated a carpet store in Baton Rouge for many years and later moved to San Diego where he was employed by Hickory Springs Carpet Mills as salesman.
Richard loved life and loved having fun being with his friends and family. He always said the More the Merrier. He followed the stock market daily, loved going to the Palace every morning and then going to The Elks Lodge a little later in the day, and he loved hunting and fishing. He hunted and fished with the same group of men from Krotz Springs area, from high school days until his death. He has stayed in contact with many old friends from all over the country, speaking to them every couple of months.
Richard was the type of person that you never forgot. He was funny, caring, and interesting. Over the years in travels, there were many times that the people approached him that had met him 2030 years earlier, and they always had a funny story to tell that involved him.
In 1995 he moved back to Opelousas and married Jackie Sharp. He was home and settled into a routine easily.
He was preceded in death by wife, Jackie Sharp Griffin, and is survived by a daughter, Mary Louise Bonadona, a son Richard Kuntz and his wife, Gabi of New Orleans, grandchildren, Alexa and Joey Bonadona, Katie, Rebecca and Elizabeth Kuntz, also Cyndi Vidrine and her husband Tony of Opelousas, Brad Nezat and his wife Dena, of Prarieville, La, and Steven Nezat of Opelousas, Mandi Vidrine, Chelsea Meliet and her husband Kurt, Carmin Nezat, Amber Nezat, Nick Vidrine, and Samuel Nezat. Samuel Nezat is also his special Godchild. A sister, Karen Griffin Barnett and her husband Joe, of Kenner, La, and one niece JoLee Barnett, and a special cousin Dixie Peterson and her husband Dave of Santa Clarita, Ca. He is also survived by his very special FAT CAT Gary Gilbert.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mildred Sandoz Griffin Cuz and Hinton Turner Griffin, his maternal grandparents Lydia Marie Stagg Sandoz and Marshall Landon Sandoz, his paternal grandparents, Richard Lee and Annie B. Turner Griffin of Groveton, Texas.
Visitation will be at Sibille Funeral Home on Wednesday February 29, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
