Opelousas Funeral services for Reverend Dula Trahan., age 87, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at Sibille Funeral Home in Grand Coteau, LA. Internment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.
Reverend Trahan was a native of Duson, LA, grew up in Broussard, and was a long-time resident of Opelousas. She died at 11:25 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at The Acadia and St. Landry Hospital in Church Point, LA.
During her life, Dula raised cattle, sheep and dogs. She will be remembered for her missionary work in Haiti. At age 60 she started traveling to Haiti, and at age 62 she began her missionary work, building orphanages there and starting seven churches. Reverend Trahan hosted many orphans in Haiti, providing them with a home and education. The Mission in Haiti and many other churches were the result of her work. She continued to travel back and forth from Haiti until the age of 87. She was affiliated with the International Gospel Assemblies, Inc. She was a member of Community Christian Assembly in Sunset, LA.
Survivors include three daughters: Sandra Broom, Kathleen Hollier, and Susette Cochran and husband, Barry, all of Opelousas; 2 sons, Harvey Trahan and wife, Sharon of Blanco, Texas; and David Trahan and wife, Elizabeth of Opelousas; 15 Grandchildren and numerous Great-grandchildren. She also had a host of orphans in Haiti.
Reverend Trahan was preceded in death by her husband, Irby Trahan; her parents, Leo Trahan and Edna A. Melancon Trahan; a brother, Haywood L. Trahan; and one grandchild, Aaron Hollier.
Pallbearers will be: Jake Beebe, Gabriel Hollier, Jason Broom, Jerek Beebe, Christopher Hollier and Lane Trahan.
Visiting hours will be observed on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, from 9:00 a.m.-9 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Grand Coteau. On Wednesday, visitation will continue in the funeral home from 8 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family to help defray the funeral expenses or the Mission in Haiti.
