Grand Coteau Funeral services for Mr. Ravis Joseph Lavergne, age 72, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel of Grand Coteau. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park of Opelousas.
Deacon Sammy Diesi will officiate the services.
Ravis was born in Church Point and was a longtime resident of Sunset. He died on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at the Acadian Medical Center in Eunice after battling a long illness.
He was an avid Boxing enthusiast, a Golden Glove Champion, and a boxing coach for the Sunset Boxing Club for many years where he elevated several amateur boxers to Regional and National Championships and Professional Champs. He was a retired school bus driver with the St. Landry Parish School System, a previous selfcontractor for his home construction business, and the past owner of his trucking company, Brewer Transport. He was a member of the Humble Cottage Lodge 19 Masonic Lodge of Opelousas.
He enjoyed spending time visiting with family and friends. He was an excellent person, wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, brother, and a great friend. He always kept his own with his strong thoughts, ideas, and beliefs.
Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Linda Sea Lavergne of Sunset one son, Ravis Joseph Sonny Lavergne II and wife, Michelle of Sunset two daughters, Julie Higginbotham and husband, Walt of Sunset and Jodi Lavergne of Carencro two stepsons, Richard Grote and wife, Victoria of Oregon and Michael Grote and companion, Tara of Alexandria two brothers, Floyd Lavergne of Washington and Donald Lavergne of South Korea eleven grandchildren: Gage Lavergne and Christian Lavergne Jo Daigle and Mindi Daigle B. J. Courville Constantine Spence Courville, Brady Courville, and Brailie Courville Angel Guidry, Rae Darbonne, and Dane Burleigh three stepgrandchildren, Brianne Grote, Ava Grote, and Bella Grote and twelve greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kay Burleigh parents, Elton Black Lavergne and Antonia Savoie Lavergne and his first wife, Rowena Lavergne.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Grand Coteau on Monday, August 22, 2011, from 4 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. On Tuesday, visitation will continue from 8 a.m. until the time of services.
A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. and a Masonic service will be held at 6:45 p.m. on Monday evening in the funeral home.
