Opelousas- A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Ollie Marion Richard, known to many as "Sonny Boy" will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, in the St. Bridget Catholic Church in Lawtell. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the St. Bridget Cemetery. Father Ted Broussard will celebrate the Mass. Military honors will be held at the cemetery.
Ollie was a native of Opelousas and a resident of Plaisance. He died on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at his home at the age of 68.
He was a retired US Army Master Sergeant, who proudly served his country for 23 years. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry for his service as an Infantryman during his 3 tours in Vietnam. Later in his career, he served as a Communications Maintenance Chief and as a ROTC Instructor at Southeastern University in Hammond. After his retirement, he worked with the Opelousas Housing Authority as a Maintenance Repairer II.
Pastime activities include being outdoors and bird watching. He enjoyed collecting antiques, crafting and sports. He enjoyed getting together with friends and family. He was a very loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Arlene Duplechien Richard of Plaisance; two sons, Kevin Dupre and wife, Meagan of Cleburne, TX; and Kristopher Dupre and wife, Cynde of Eaton, CO; sister, Cheryl Richard Smith of Sunset; and five grandchildren, Sam, Ansleigh, Sophie, Claire, and Daphne.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luma and Hazel Richard; grandparents, Joseph Numa Richard and Marie Cleophina Thibodeaux, and Ollie Marion Arnold and Lillian Checker; Father-in-law, Leon Duplechien; and mother-in-law, Eurella Fontenot Leger.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Dupre, Kristopher Dupre, Michael Duplechien, Lee Carriere, Didier "T-Boy" Hargroder, and Bruce Joubert
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, beginning at 4:00 p.m. with an all night wake until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening in the Funeral Home.
