Prairie RondeA Mass of Christian Burial for Nellie Bertrand Fontenot will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prairie Ronde. Fr. Ted Broussard will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Prairie Ronde. The readings for the Mass will be done by Hilman Bertrand, Sandra Walker, and Rachel Colligan. The gifts will be presented by Heidi Credeur and Katie Cart. The altar servers will be Peyton Smith and Ian Bertrand.
It is with great sadness that the family of Nellie Bertrand Fontenot announces her passing on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at her home in Prairie Ronde, LA, at the age of 76.
Nellie was a homemaker and excellent seamstress, and enjoyed filling the closets and homes of her family and friends with her beautiful creations. She sewed at The Lazy Daisy, then Sheila Davlin Designs, doing what she was most passionate about. She later worked for Drs. Merrick Wyble and Kenneth Lafleur.
She will be greatly missed by her husband of 58 years, J. Clyde Peanut Fontenot and her five children, Rickey Fontenot and wife, Diane of Prairie Ronde Charlotte Phillips and husband, Jerry of Prairie Ronde David Fontenot and wife, Lydia of St. Amant Timothy Fontenot and wife, Clair of Prairie Ronde and Karen Lavergne and husband, Gary of Nuba. She is also survived by two brothers, Hilman L. Bertrand and wife, Linda of Slidell and Lee Bertrand and wife, Pam of New Orleans three sisters, Anna Doucet and husband, John of Prairie Ronde Vivian Carriere and husband, Cecil of Lafayette and Sylvia Thomas and partner, Lee Huff of Port Barre 18 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hilman F. Bertrand, Sr. and Ivel Darbonne Bertrand and her sister, Lena Ray Young.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Fontenot, Brandon Trahan, Dexter Fontenot, Cory Fontenot, Jacob Lavergne, and Blake Lavergne. Brennan Buller will be the honorary pallbearer.
A special thank you is extended to her loving caregiver, Darlene Coon, and to the staff of Hospice of Acadiana.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Friday, July 18, 2014, from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. On Saturday, the funeral home will reopen at 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 pm in the funeral home on Friday. Special music selections will be sung my Clair Fontenot at the funeral home.
