Mary Nell Jennings Schad

Opelousas Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Nell Jennings Schad, known to many as Nell, age 71, were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2008, in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.

Rev. Pam Roy officiated the services.

Mrs. Schad was a native of Falls County, TX and a long-time resident of Opelousas. She died on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 1:07 p.m. in the Opelousas General Health System.

She was a brilliant woman, earning her degrees from Rice University and North Texas University. She was an exceptional teacher who for 20 years taught in the Richardson School District in Dallas, TX. She also taught American History and Government to military children as part of the NATO Program in France for one year and in Oxford, England for four years.

She was a very devoted wife and loving step mother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved her faith, spending time with her family and friends, and collecting angels. She was a very special woman and was an instrumental person in the community. She was an active member of LA Memorial United Methodist Church in Opelousas; President of the Opelousas Women's Club, Co-Chairman of the United Way, an active participant in the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life; was awarded the 1992 Citizen of the Year of Opelousas; Past member of the Opelousas Community Choir; very active and heavily involved as a contributor to the Special Olympics. She was also on the Board of Directors for the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra in Lafayette; Board of National Symphony in Washington, D.C., Board member of the Women in Crisis Foundation in Washington, D.C., Board of Directors for the Business and Industrial Council in Washington, D.C. She was instrumental in sending medical supplies to the children's cancer center in St. Petersburg, Russia, traveling twice to Russia to oversee the medical donations.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Bailey of Houston, TX; one step son, Peter Schad of Opelousas; one aunt, Velma Vogel of West Columbia, TX; and three cousins: Billy Jenn and Tommy Jenn of West Columbia, TX; and Larry Stewart of Ennis, TX.

Mrs. Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Ted J. Schad, Jr.; and her parents: James Aubrey Jennings and Mary Louise Casburn Jennings.

Those serving as Pallbearers were: Dr. Joe Wilson, Dr. Tom Darbonne, Earl Taylor, DA, Dr. David Williams, Dr. Lucius Doucet and David Ryder.

Visiting hours were observed on Friday, January 11, 2008, from 4-6 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Saturday, visitation continued in the funeral home from 8 a.m. until time of services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Nell Schad to the American Cancer Society and LA Memorial United Methodist Church of Opelousas.
