Opelousas-Funeral services for Nancy Langford Mitchell will be at held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Hope Presbyterian Church, 434 S. Main Street, Opelousas. The religious service will be conducted by Rev. John Uhl and Rev. Ned Rutland.

Nancy Langford Mitchell was a resident of Opelousas almost all of her life. She was known to many as Nan. Nan passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2009, in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, she was 85.

She was born in Springfield, Tennessee on June 6, 1924, to Mr. and Mrs. James Langford. As a family, they moved to Opelousas where her father bought the local newspaper and started the Clarion News. All her growing years, she lived at 448 South Union Street with her father, mother, and two sisters-Jibby and Chee Chee. She attended Opelousas High School where she was editor of the schools first newspaper and a member of the tennis team. She was the first delegate from this area to attend the Pelican Girls State and wrote an essay that received a Congressional award which earned her a trip to Washington, D.C. where she studied government. At 18, she won a New Orleans Times Picayune award for her writing.
PNan attended Southwestern University in Lafayette. In 1943, she enjoyed being feature editor of the college newspaper and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. During World War II she worked in President Fletchers office helping with war communications for Commander Taggart, commanding officer of the ROTC.SPAN styleFONT-SIZE: 14pt;
