Mildred Simoneaux Cortez

Opelousas Funeral services for Mildred Simoneaux Cortez, 73, will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, February 28, 2007, in Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Opelousas. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas. Reverend Angello Cremaldi will conduct the services.

Mrs. Cortez, a native of Church Point and resident of Opelousas, died at 10:30PM Sunday February 25, 2007 at Opelousas General Health System.

Survivors include: three daughters, Carolyn Artall and husband Mark of Lafayette, Kathy Whipp and husband Neal of Opelousas, and Claire Daly of Lafayette; her 9 grandchildren, Benjamin and Jonathan Daly, Sarah, Aline, Noah, and Maggie Whipp, Elizabeth, Rebecca, and Matthew Artall.

Mildred S. Cortez was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Hubert Cortez; parents, Leonie and Sarah Henry Simoneaux; brother, Frank Simoneaux and son-in-law, Chris Daly.

Mrs. Cortez was a 1951 S.L.I. graduate and received her Masters Degree from L.S.U. in 1961. She taught thousands of children at Grolee Elementary and Opelousas Catholic over her 45 year teaching career and remembered those days fondly after retirement.

A very active member of and past Regent of Catholic Daughters of America, Mrs. Cortez also served on the Court of St. Bridget of Lawtell and served as a member of the Court of St. Landry until her death.She was a longtime member of the Delta Kappa Gama Honorary Educators Fraternity and also a member of the Queen of Angels Altar Society.
