OPELOUSAS- A Mass of Christian Burial for Matthew Gene Richard will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Fr. Clint Trahan will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Rite of Committal will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.
Matthew Gene Richard, a devoted Catholic, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2023, at his home. Born on February 4, 1955, in Church Point, Louisiana, Matthew lived an extraordinary life dedicated to his work and cherished family.
Matthew began his career in the oilfield industry and quickly rose through the ranks to become a respected Captain Mate. With his exceptional skills and strong work ethic, he navigated countless challenges at sea and earned the admiration of his colleagues. Matthew's commitment to his profession was unwavering, and he played an integral role in ensuring the safe transportation of precious cargo.
Outside of work, Matthew had an array of interests that shaped him as a person. He was an avid reader who immersed himself in literature from various genres. This passion for reading not only expanded his knowledge but also provided him with a valuable source of solace and inspiration. Matthew possessed remarkable creativity when it came to crafting rosaries. He dedicated hours to meticulously handcrafting each one with utmost precision and care. These beautiful creations served as symbols of faith for countless individuals who sought comfort in their spirituality. Matthew's talent extended beyond craftsmanship; he had a unique ability to connect with people through prayer and shared devotion.
Above all else, Matthew treasured spending time with his beloved family. His wife Tamra Freeman Richard was by his side throughout their journey together—a pillar of strength and unwavering support. Together they built a life of love, laughter, and unwavering commitment.
Matthew was a loving father to his sons: Brian Richard (Shelly), Brant Richard, Brad Richard, Brady Richard (Courtney), as well as his stepson Alexander Pousson. He instilled in them the values of honesty, integrity, and dedication that have carried them through their own paths in life.
His daughter Brandi Taylor (Marcus) held a special place in Matthew's heart, and their bond was a testament to the profound love shared between a father and daughter.
Matthew's brothers, Rickey Richard (Kay) and Gary Richard, stood by his side as loyal companions throughout their lives. Kathleen Manuel (Kenneth) and Karleen Richard were his devoted sisters, one godchild Katie Denise Manuel, offering unwavering support and unconditional love.
The joys of Matthew's life extended to his eight grandchildren, who brought immense happiness to his world. Seeing them flourish and succeed filled his heart with pride. Matthew had the honor of also welcoming a great-grandchild into this world, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations.

A visitation will be held at the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel in Opelousas, on Thursday, November 23, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be prayed at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. On Friday the funeral home will reopen from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
In Lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made to the family to help cover funeral expenses.
