Mary was born in Arcadia, LA and later moved to the town of Springhill, LA where she was raised. Mary was a 1952 graduate of LA Tech with a bachelors degree in secondary science education. After teaching at several schools she settled in and retired from Opelousas High School with 35 years of teaching experience. While teaching she acquired a Masters degree from USL. She was a devoted member of the Opelousas First Baptist Church, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of school teachers.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Howard F. Young, Jr., two daughters, Beverly Y. Baker and husband Roy of Gueydan, Donna Y. Urban and husband Richard of Opelousas; seven grandchildren, Julie B. Richard, PhD and husband Christian of Kaplan, Dr. Mark Urban and wife Elizabeth of Tucson, Arizona, Roy Baker, Jr. of Baton Rouge, Dr. Kristine U. Olivier and husband John of New Orleans, William Baker and Hillary Baker, both of Gueydan, and Rachel Urban of Opelousas, one sister Audrey Lee Matlock and husband Rodger of Atlanta, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents Wilma and Atkins of Springhill, LA. Visitation will be Friday, November 13th from 2 to 9 PM, and Saturday from 8 to 10 AM. Funeral will be Saturday, November 14th at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Opelousas. Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas is in charge of all arrangements.
