Opelousas Funeral services for Mary Lou Cane August will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at New Pilgrim Baptist Church. Interment will follow at New Pilgrim Baptist in Palmetto, LA. Rev. Darrell Sampson will officiate the service.
Mary Lou was born in Washington and a longtime resident of Palmetto. She passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014, at Opelousas General Health System, at the age of 85. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mary Lou was a Teacher and later became Center Director at Lebeau Head Start for over 30 years. She was a member of the Church Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, and Choir Member and quilting club. She enjoyed reading, quilting, and loved to travel with her family.
Survivors include her brother, Steven Cane, Jr. and wife, Bettye of Lawrenceville, GA., sisters, Hinda Mae Semien of Palmetto, and Rosa Lee Hudson of Los Angeles, CA.,
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Lee August, her parents, Steven, Sr. and Addie Bennett Cane, her son, Steve Gregory August, brothers, Lawrence Cane, Sr., Mervin Cane, Sr. and Fredrick Fisher, Sr., sisters, Shirley Mae Cane and Lucille Hester Ford.
Visiting hours will be observed in the New Pilgrim Baptist Church, on Saturday, June 14, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be, Edward Semien, III, Joseph W. Semien, Jeremy Tizeno, Darius Wilson, Marcus Wilson, and Willie Lamb.
