Grand Coteau-A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for Mrs. Marie Louise Melancon Eaglin. Interment will follow in the St. Charles Cemetery in Grand Coteau.
Mrs. Eaglin passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Opelousas General Health System at the age of 73. She was a native of Sunset and a longtime resident of Grand Coteau. Her 35 years devoted to public education began with teaching at Sunset Elementary and then continued at Grand Coteau Elementary School until her retirement. She was also a longtime parishioner and Eucharistic Minister of St. Charles Catholic Church. She would visit the sick and elderly in the community as well as a volunteer with the South St. Landry Community Library. As a pastime, she would enjoy making Rosaries, writing poetry, sewing, and listening to Gospel music.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Joseph MacArthur "Mac" Eaglin of Grand Coteau; two sons, James Darin Eaglin, Sr. and wife, Anna of Missouri City, TX; and John Eric Eaglin and wife, Antoinette of Cartersville, GA; one daughter, Sharlotte Eaglin-Hamilton and husband, Michael Hamilton, Sr. of Lafayette; daughter-in-law, Norma Jean Gordon Eaglin of Breaux Bridge; two brothers, Joseph Dwight Savoie of Breaux Bridge; and Walter Bertrand Savoie of Church Point; three sisters, Cheryl Johnson-Masga of, NV; Angelice Johnson-Mamou of Sunset; and Patricia Gotch of Sunset; seven grandchildren: Anastacia Gordon, David Eaglin, Janae Eaglin, James Eaglin, Jr., James "Trey" Eaglin III, John Eric Eaglin, Jr., and Bradley Hamilton; and two great-grandchildren, Jarrick Gordon and Daylon Eaglin.
Mrs. Eaglin was preceded in death by her father, Albert Melancon; mother, Mary Frances Johnson Savoie; son, Eugene Chadwick Eaglin; and brother, Johnny Johnson.
Pallbearers will be James Darin Eaglin, Sr., John Eric Eaglin, Sr., Alexcie Guillory, Jr., Walter Bertrand Savoie, David Eaglin, and James Darin Eaglin, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clayton Mamou, Carl Mamou, Christopher Mamou, Michael Hamilton, Sr., Dwight Savoie, and Alexcie Guillory, Sr.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Grand Coteau on Monday, September 7, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. On Tuesday, the visitation will continue in the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening.
