Port Barre Funeral services for Mr. Marcus Christopher Verrette, age 39, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Interment will be held on Monday, February 7, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military honors.
Father Daniel Picard will be the celebrant for the Mass and the graveside service.
Marcus was a native of Metairie and a longtime resident of Port Barre. He died on Monday, January 31, 2011, at Opelousas General Health System.
SSG Marcus Verrette was a U. S. Army Veteran who proudly served his country for two tours in Iraq. He enlisted into the Army from 20002007. During his tour, he was an infantryman and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal. He was also awarded numerous Achievement, Service, and Good Conduct Medals and Ribbons. He was previously in the Marine Corp. from 19931996.
He enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, and going camping. He would spend lots of time with the family especially his children. He also liked to cook. He was a loving husband, and a wonderful father, brother, and son.
Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Celeste Robin Verrette of Port Barre three sons: Marc Verrette, Christopher Verrette, and Kole Verrette, all of Port Barre one daughter, Valarie Robin of Port Barre his mother, Maureen Bazar Verrette of Port Barre two brothers: Casey Verrette of Port Barre and Nicholas Verrette of La Porte, TX one sister, Kellie V. Soileau and husband, Jason of Port Barre motherinlaw, Peggy Bourgeois Guise and husband, Russell Kelly Guise of Port Barre fatherinlaw, Joseph Donald Robin of Carencro and a host of nieces, nephews, brothersinlaw, and sistersinlaw.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Verrette paternal grandparents: Jacques A. Verrette and Gladys Sanders Verrette and maternal grandparents: Lloyd Bazar and Leatrice Marks Bazar.
Visiting hours were observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Port Barre on Thursday, February 3, 2011, from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. On Friday, visitation continued in the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
A Rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening in the funeral home.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the Doctors and Staff of Opelousas General Health System for their wonderful care and dedication given to Marcus during his time of need.
