Madeline S. Burleigh

Opelousas Funeral services for Mrs. Madeline S. Burleigh, age 80, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009, in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel in Opelousas. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park.

Rev. Durlin LeJeune will officiate the service.

Mrs. Burleigh was a native of Sunset, LA, and was a long-time resident of Opelousas. She died on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in the Opelousas General Health System. Mrs. Burleigh was retired from the Opelousas Developmental Center as an evaluator. Her greatest passion was her family especially her grandchildren. She was a loving wife and a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed cooking for her family and attending church. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Sunset. She will be sadly missed by her family and all who worked with her.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd J. Burleigh of Prairie Ronde; four daughters: Verna Johnson and husband, David of Lawtell; Patricia Pat Soileau and husband, Dale of Prairie Ronde; Floydine Thibodeaux and husband, Wade of Lawtell; and Josie Burleigh of Prairie Ronde; one sister, Nima Wills of Baton Rouge; 7 grandchildren: Melissa D. Rodrigues, John Floyd Soileau, Guy Ellis Thibodeaux, Randall Jude Burleigh, BJ Johnson, and April Lynn Thibodeaux; 9 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Burleigh was preceded in death by her parents: Samuel Sam Stanford and Josie Checker Stanford; one brother, Alton Stanford; sisters: Beatrice Bea S. Burleigh, Lois S. Bernard, Ethel S. Bernard, Jessie Jattie Stanford, Capitola Cap S. Shiller, and Katherine Kitty S. Fontenot.

Visiting hours will be observed on Friday, January 2, 2009, from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Saturday, visitation will continue in the funeral home from 9 a.m. until time of services.
