Leander J. L.J. Lavergne, Sr.
Opelousas Funeral services for Leander J. Lavergne, Sr., known to many as L.J., age 83, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Sibille Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park. Father Angelo Cremaldi will celebrate the Mass.
L.J. was a native of Bellevue and a resident of Lafayette. He died on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Lafayette General Medical Center.
He began his career as a teacher and a high school principal with the St. Landry Parish School System working for 20 years. He worked as a pipefitter primarily in Baton Rouge. Then, he was the district manager for Moorman's Manufacturing Company of the South Louisiana area. Finally, he worked in the Southwest Louisiana area as a petroleum landman.
He was a member of the ULL Alumni Association Formerly SLI and LSU Alumni Association, Retired Teacher's Association, Knights of Columbus Council, Ducks Unlimited, and a former member of the American Legion in Sunset. He was a US Navy Veteran who served his country during World War II.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Joyce R. Lavergne of Lafayette; one son, Leander J. Joe Lavergne Jr. and wife, Susan of Lafayette; four daughters: Julie L. Richard and husband, Carroll of Baton Rouge; Jill L. Lattier and husband, Ken of Jonesboro, AR; Jayne L. Falk and husband, Tom of Lexington, SC; and Jennifer L. Rockar and husband, Rick of Richboro, PA; two brothers: Kenneth Lavergne of Bellevue; and Carroll Lavergne and wife, Shirley of Lewisburg; three sisters: Irma Quirk of Carencro: Roselyn L. Soileau and husband, Richard of Opelousas; and Elizabeth L. Crump of Laplace; one brother-in-law, Charles Richard and wife, Linda of Opelousas; seven grandchildren : Leander J. Lee Lavergne III, Kelley Richard, Kimi Brown, Lauren Lavergne, Ross Moran, Rachel Moran, and Trey Brown; and two great-grandchildren: Kirsten Mutrie and Harlee Mutrie: and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Louise Sibille Lavergne; one daughter; Elaine Marie Lavergne; two brothers: Bernard and Eugene Lavergne: and one sister; Lillian Barry.
