Joseph E. Prather, Sr.

Opelousas Mass of Christian Burial Services for Mr. Joseph Ernest Prather, Sr. age 89, will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas. Reverend Father James Brady will conduct the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas.

Mr. Joseph passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Church Point and was a long time resident of Opelousas. Mr. Prather was a veteran having served in the Army Air Force during WWII where he flew over fifty missions in the European Theater during WWII he was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant he also was a member of the local VFW. He retired from working at the JW Low and TGY stores, where he served as the store manager. Mr. Prather was faithful unto God and his Church, St. Landry Catholic where he served as Eucharistic Minister. Mr. Prather loved planting his garden and working with wood. He made furniture and toys for children. Mr. Prather is going to be sadly missed by his family and all that knew and loved him.

Mr. Joseph is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maude Doucet Prather of Opelousas son, Randall J. Prather and wife Cynthia Cindy of Opelousas daughters, Karen Burley and husband Kenneth Mike of Denham Springs, Karla Watts and husband Randy of Gonzales daughterinlaw, Seeta K. Prather of Opelousas sisters, Ruby Sloane of Crowley, Mary Sue Snedaker of VA ten grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren six great grandchildren and three stepgreat grandchildren.

Mr. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Benjamin and Zulma Matt Prather and son Joseph E. Joey Prather, Jr. brothers, James Nathan Prather and Lee Burton Prather.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. until 9 p.m. and reopen on Monday at 8:00 a.m. A Rosary Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.
