Joseph Shorty Mervin Ortego
Opelousas Funeral services for Mr. Joseph Shorty Mervin Ortego, age 69, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, July 28, 2008, in the St. Landry Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery. Msgr. Robert Romero will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.
Mr. Ortego was born in Washington and was a long time resident of Opelousas. He passed away at 9:55 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Opelousas General Medical Center.
Mr. Ortego was retired from Budweiser Distribution Co. with over 38 years of service. He was a devoted husband, and a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, dogs, and training dogs. He really enjoyed spending time with family and friends cooking, laughing, and reminiscing the good times. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include three daughters: Diana Lynn Stelly and fianc, Robert Bobby Deviller of Opelousas; Amy Slay of Opelousas; and Billie Jo Johnson and husband, Errol of Arnaudville; eight grandchildren: Lacie Stelly, Lance Stelly, Sarah Stelly, Desire Slay Monecino and husband, Carl Mex, Jessica Slay, Roxanne Johnson, Brittany Johnson, and Luke Johnson. and 8 great-grandchildren: Skylar Slay, Cashman Verrett, Nayson Allemond, Kadon Allemond, Kolli Allemond, Devin Trahan, Jaylynn Slay, and Brianna Montecino.
Preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Louise Miller Ortego; his parents: John and Amy Smith Ortego; two sons-in-law, Richard Stelly and John Slay; and two brothers: Paul Ortego and Sylvan Ortego.
Pallbearers will be Lance Stelly, Errol Johnson, Carl Mex Montecino, Robert Devillier, George Miller, and Paul Wayne Ortego.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Sunday, July 27, 2008, beginning at 1 p.m. with an all night wake until 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
A Rosary Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening in the funeral home.
