Opelousas A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. John Alden Vige, age 85, will be Celebrated at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church with the Reverend Fr. Angelo Cremaldi as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.

A native of Lafayette and a longtime resident of Opelousas, known to many as Alden passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008, in the Opelousas General Health System.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he proudly served his country as a Lieutenant during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post, the Lions Club, Opelousas Country Club. He was a member of the Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church and actively served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council. He also served on the Cerebral Palsy Board for many years.

For many years, Alden worked in the Public School System as a football coach and teacher at Opelousas Catholic and DeQuincy High School. Finally, he became a Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance for the St. Landry Parish School Board. He was a member of the N Club at Northwestern State University, the O Club at Opelousas Senior High School, National Child Welfare and Attendance Association, National Education Association, L.A.E. Louisiana Association of Educators, St. Landry Parish Teachers Association,

During his 28 years of retirement, whether it was hunting, fishing, gardening, or playing golf, Alden was as avid an outdoorsman as they come. A devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Alden will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Vera of Opelousas; three daughters: Cynthia Vige of Lubbock, TX; Jeanne Doggett of Natchitoches, LA; and Lisa Bostick and husband,, Wayne of Natchitoches, LA; one brother, Robert Eric Vige of Potomac , Maryland; five grandchildren: Allison Doggett, Nicole Doggett, Monty Doggett, Jr., David Bostick, and Lindsey Bostick; and five nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Oralise A. E. Vige and Agnes Bihm Vige.

Pallbearers will be Monty Doggett, Jr., David Bostick, Bill Edwards, Jamie Green, Greg Bordelon, and Ronnie Richard.

Visiting hours will be observed from 6 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2008, Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Tuesday, visitation will continue at 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening in the funeral home.

In lieu of Flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Aldens name to the United Cerebral Palsy of Baton Rouge, 1805 College Drive, Baton Rouge, LA, 70808.
