Opelousas- A Memorial Service for Mr. John Fredrick Schooff will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016, in the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany of Opelousas. Madre Annie Etheredge will officiate the services.
John was a native of New York City, NY, a previous resident of Metairie for 30 years, and was currently residing in Washington since 2005. He passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016, at Opelousas General Health System at the age of 86. He was retired from working as a Marine Engineer with the Merchant Marines. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict as a Paratrooper and received two Purple Hearts. He was a member of the 187 Airborne and was an Arms instructor for R.O.T.C. He was also a member of the MEBA Union, Alcoholics Anonymous for 41 years, and the Acadiana Chapter for 187th Airborne.
He was a member of the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany of Opelousas and a Delegate for the Diocesan Convention.
He was an avid Saints fan who enjoyed watching football games. He enjoyed shooting and was a member of the NRA. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He had a big heart and loved his pets especially helping the ones he rescued.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Rose Evelyn Kornrumpf Schooff of Washington; one daughter, Lorelei Ward and husband, John of Queens, NY; stepsons, Marc Hayden and wife, Karen of Washington; Wayne Hayden of Opelousas; and Craig Hayden and wife, Kathleen of Opelousas; stepdaughter, Aleta Hayden of Eunice; two brothers, Richard Schooff and wife, Shonie of NY; and Joseph "Joey" Schooff of NY; two sisters, Johannah Mennen of New York City, NY; and Wilhelmina "Cookie" Shaw of NY; 9 step grandchildren and 15 step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilhelm Schooff and mother, Emma Wallachs.
The visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016, in the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Opelousas.
