Grand Coteau Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012, at St. Charles Catholic Church, for John J. Landry, age 91. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the St. Charles Cemetery in Grand Coteau.
Mr. Landry died Monday, September, 17, 2012, at Louisiana war Veterans Home in Jackson, La.
Visitation will be held at Sibille Funeral Home in Grand Coteau on Thursday, September 20, 2012, from 5PM until 9PM, and from 10AM until 3PM on Friday. A rosary will be held at 7:30 PM, Thursday.
Survivors include his daughters Velba Kidder of Walker, LA., and Margaret Thibodeaux and husband, Tony of Laurel, MD., nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and four greatgreat grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Cedalise Mouton Landry, his wife, Mary Alice Marks Landry, his brothers, Jules Emile Landry, Sr., and Edward Landry, his sisters, Mrs. Frank Louise Marks, and Mrs. Eugenia Bernard, one soninlaw Edward Kidder, and one granddaughter, Mary Kidder.
John was a native and lifelong resident of the Sunset area. John was a World War II veteran of the Army, who supervised reconstruction of schools in the Philippines during his time of service. He was a lifelong member of St. Charles Parish. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and a volunteer fireman. He had many occupations during his lifetime. He was a farmer, house mover, barber, blacksmith, welder, carpenter, and a master brick mason. At the time of his retirement, he was employed as a construction supervisor in the oil industry. After retirement, he worked at his niece Rowenas grocery store in Sunset. Mr. Landry was an avid fisherman, who loved the outdoors, and spending time with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
