John Cooper Helm, Sr.
Opelousas-Funeral services for Mr. John Cooper Helm, Sr., age 68, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2006, in Ascension Episcopal Church in Lafayette, LA. Interment will follow in the Wilmer Memorial Cemetery in Lecompte, LA.
Cooper was a resident of Opelousas and died at 4:45 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2006, in Youngsville, LA. He was born in Eunice, LA, and grew up in Opelousas, LA. He was a past resident of Lafayette, New Orleans, and Youngsville. He earned a living as a Pharmacist and a Stock broker. He also served his country in the Army.
Cooper was a man of many talents. He was a former member of the New Orleans Big Fishing Club and an avid golfer who once shot Par. He enjoyed classical music, loved reading and reciting poetry, and dancing to Cajun music. But most of all, his true calling was that of a loving, caring man who inspired the hearts of anyone who knew him- especially his family and friends. In an instant, his joy and love for life rubbed off to whoever was in his presence. Those who knew him best will remember his quote, when I'm gone the world will be a quieter place. He loved the simple things in life: a newspaper and coffee, a slow waltz, fig preserves, can syrup, the dew on the grass and of course, MSNBC to check the stock exchange.
Survivors include his three children: Mary Helm and Caroline Helm, both of Lafayette; and Cooper Helm, Jr. of Baton Rouge; two grandchildren: Lauren Boullion of Lafayette; and Reilly Helm of Baton Rouge; his companion and soul mate, Yvette Voorhies of Youngsville; his brother, Dr. Robert Helm and wife, Catherine Chadwick Helm of New Roads; former wife, Emily Kean; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Newton Cooper Helm and Corinne Gaeinnie Helm.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Randy Newman, Perkins Thornton, John Polk, Brad Davis, Robert Helm, and Michael Helm.
Cooper wished to special thank his special friends: Leah Joseph and Randy Newman, Hospice of Acadiana, the Radiology Department of Opelousas General and the Organization of Alcoholic Anonymous.
Visiting hours will be observed from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2006, at the Ascension Episcopal Church, 1030 Johnston Street, Lafayette, LA, 70501
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic, 1317 Jefferson Street, Lafayette, LA, 70501 or Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Suite 200, Lafayette, LA, 70503.
