Port Barre-A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2016, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Port Barre for John Burke Fontenot, Sr.. Fr. Dan Picard will concelebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery in Port Barre.
John was a native of Chataignier and a longtime resident of Port Barre. He passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at his home, at the age of 83.
John proudly served in the Navy, was a Veteran of Korean War and also serving as an interpreter in the Indochina War. He was a retired DOTD employee, an Alderman of Port Barre for 7 years, and the Mayor of Port Barre for 16 years. John was a past President and vice President of the Lions club, and Vice President of the 3rd District Federal Highway Credit Union. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grand father. He enjoyed visiting and talking with family and friends. He never met a stranger and always was ready to help someone in need. He loved to dance and listen to "French Music". He will be sadly missed by all.
Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Barbara Hardy Fontenot of Port Barre, son, Jody Fontenot and his wife, Hope of Port Barre, daughter, Jamie Kaiser and her husband, Billy of Krotz Springs, 11 grandchildren, Alexis, Jaci, Burke, Morgan, Bennett, Brandon, and Emmi Fontenot, Kaleb, Kailee, Corley, and Cade Kaiser. He is survived by two sisters Raella Fuselier, Jane Fontenot and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Fontenot, his mother Ena Fontenot Doucet, and his stepfather J.B. Doucet.
The visitation will begin on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday evening in the funeral home. On Monday, visitation will continue at 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home.
