Opelousas- A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. John Murphy Carriere will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park with Rev. Fr. Bart Jasilek as the celebrant.
Mr. Carriere passed away on Monday, March 23, 2015, at the Regional Medical Center in Lafayette at the age of 79.
Murphy was a native of Church Point and long-time resident of Opelousas. He was a Truck driver for many years. His last job was with LA Wholesale. He was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council #5532 in Lawtell. He enjoyed gardening, having family gatherings, and playing cards with his friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Earleen Faul Carriere of Opelousas; sons, John Tony Carriere and wife, Erika of Opelousas; and Murphy Blaine Carriere and wife, Stacy of Opelousas; daughters, Verna Dunbar and husband, Chris of Opelousas; Susie Dugar and husband, Martin of Baton Rouge; Pearl Stelly and husband, Easton of Opelousas; Jackie Savoy and husband, Jimmy of Church Point; Lorraine Bonin and husband, Jason of Arnaudville; and Melissa Benoit and husband, Kevin of Church Point; brothers, John Terry Carriere and James Steve Carriere, both of Church Point; sisters, Laura Lee Faul of Lawtell, Lela Mae Miller of Church Point, Ethel Lee Bearb of Church Point, and Mary Linda Olivier of Church Point; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lillian Henry Carriere; siblings, Irby Carriere, Melvin Carriere, J. C. Carriere, and Verna Ann Carriere; and his granddaughter, Emily Dawn Savoy.
Pallbearers will be Joey Stelly, Ben Stelly, Brad Carlin, Michael Carlin, Jeremiah Carriere, Samuel Carriere, Brian Savoy, Casey Benoit, and Stephen Dunbar.
Visiting hours will be held in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, from 2:00 pm until 10:00 pm. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm. On Wednesday, the visitation will resume beginning at 8:00 am until 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's name to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
The family would like to extend special thanks to ICU staff at Regional Medical Center in Lafayette for their wonderful medial care.
