Opelousas Funeral services for John Bernard, age 80, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2012, with a Mass of Christian Burial in the St. Bridget Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery. Father Austin Leger will celebrate the Mass.
He was a native of Leonville and a long time resident of Opelousas. He passed away on Tuesday February 21, 2012 at his home.
John was in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, playing cards, bingo, and working on small motors. Bouree was his favorite past time. He was a member of Opelousas VFW. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.
Survivors include his daughters Deborah Bernard Credeur and husband, James of Opelousas, Yvette Bernard Credeur and husband, Robert of Opelousas, Renee Lynn Bernard Rogers, and husband Steve of New Iberia, Michelle Bernard Vercher and Jerry Fontenot of Opelousas, sister, Mary Ann Bernard Reed of Baton Rouge, sisterinlaw Margaret Brown Briley and husband, Ashton June Briley Jr. of Grand Prairie, Nine grand children, six step grandchildren, four great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years Barbara Brown Bernard, his parents Jean Clebert and Ethel Stanford Bermard, his brothers Cyril, A.D. and J.C Jr. Bernard, motherinlaw and fatherinlaw John and Icy Brown, step grandson, Kenneth Credeur.
A special thanks to his caregivers Christy Enriquez and Becky Stanford, Dr, Richard Tate, and to OGH 4th floor Staff, Harbor Hospice, Amedisys Home Health, for all the love and care that was given to him.
A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 pm in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday evening.
Pallbearers will be James Credeur, Robert Credeur, Steve Rogers, Chris Briley, Jerry Fontenot, Brian Savoy, James Roberie and Samuel Rogers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Nicky Briley and Johnathon Rogers.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. and will reopen on Friday morning at 8 am until time of service at 10:30 am.
