She was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, as Harriet Jean Kohn. She attended public schools, graduating from Central High School. Then, she attended the University of Southern California where she was on the varsity swim team until her diving accident. Her personal highlight was when she got to meet the Pope during tour at the Vatican. She remained active walking and swimming well into her 80s, until her heart attack in 2002. Thereafter, she suffered a long decline, with dementia resulting from the reduced blood supply to her brain. She was a devoted wife and mother.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen Schiff of Aldie, Virginia and David Schiff and wife, Sharon of Mandeville, Louisiana three grandchildren, Alexandra Schiff, Christopher Schiff and Stephen Schiff and two great grandchildren.
