Opelousas Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Opelousas, LA, for Mrs. Janice McKillop Smith, known to many as Jan. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park. The Rt. Reverend Jacob W. Owensby, Bishop will officiate the services.
Jan was a native of Ft. Worth, Texas, a past resident of Arkansas, and longtime resident of Opelousas. She passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012, at her home at the age of 67. She was a Librarian for many years.
She was the head Librarian overseer for 5 years with the Evangeline Parish Library System, and also worked previously at libraries in Arkansas. She taught high school in Arkansas and Mississippi for many years. As a pastime, she would love to read, play the piano, listen to music, and travel. She really enjoyed taking trips to France and Italy with many groups. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with family and friends especially her grandchildren. She was a past member of the Opelousas Rotary Club and the Opelousas Womens Club. She was a wonderful, loving, and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Fr. Pete Smith of Opelousas one son, Chad Smith and wife, Tricia of Opelousas one daughter, Carolyn Smallwood and husband, Allan of St. Augustine, FL her mother, Eunice Wheeless McKillop of Hope, Arkansas three grandchildren, Cole Smith, Luke Smith, and James Smallwood, and one aunt, Helen Grantham of Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her father, James McKillop.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany of Opelousas on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from 2 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. On Thursday, visitation will continue from 8 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. A Rosary service will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday evening in the church.
