James "Jim" Gamber, Jr.

Opelousas-A Funeral Service will be held for James “Jim” Gamber, Jr. on Monday, February 28, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service; the rosary will be recited at 1:00 p.m. Deacon Ulysse Joubert will conduct the service. Burial will follow at St. Landry Cemetery.

Jim, age 78, a resident of Opelousas, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at Opelousas General Health System.

Jim was a native of Baltimore, Marilyn and came to Louisiana to attend LSU; he fell in love with the area and never left. He built a career as a teacher of air conditioning and refrigeration; for over 30 years he taught in Baton Rouge, St. Martinville and Opelousas. Jim will be remembered as a kind and generous man who was willing to help anyone in need. In his later years he enjoyed collecting model train sets, making puzzles, and tending to his garden. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his sons, James Carol Gamber III of FL and Joseph Gamber of GA; her daughter, Kimberly Cantrell of GA.; step-daughter, Gwendolyn Heck (Steven) of Prairieville; step-son, Kenneth Joubert (Patricia) of Sherwood, AR; sister, Myra Schmits of MD; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; his nephew, Gregory Seybold; nieces, Pamela Gaughan and Lisa Seybold; 5 step-grandchildren, Colby Joubert (Stephanie), Brittany Brewer (Joey), Erica DeRouen (Mark), Samuel J. Heck (Sarah) and Stacey Joubert; 10 step-great-grandchildren, Matthew DeRouen, Annabelle DeRouen, Brielle Joubert, Carter Joubert, Hudson Joubert, Valentina Brewer, Benjamin Brewer, Juliet Heck, Valerie Heck, and Samuel T. Heck.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie S. Joubert Gamber; parents, James C. Gamber, Sr. and LaRue Johnson Gamber; step-son, Gregory Joubert.

Pallbearers will be Samuel Heck, Kenneth Joubert, Steven Heck, Peter Caviness and Todd Richard.
