OPELOUSAS A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2013, in St. Landry Catholic Church of Opelousas, LA, for James Franklin Smith, known to many as Jim, age 67, who passed away on November 30, 2013, at his residence. Rev. Father James Brady, pastor of St. Landry Catholic Church will celebrate the Mass and conduct the funeral service.
Mr. James was a native of Kinder, LA, and a resident of Opelousas for the past 41 years. He was a graduate of St. Pauls of Covington, LA. He served his country for 4 years in the United States Coast Guard stationed in San Francisco and Rio Vista, California. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from University of Southwestern Louisiana. James was employed by Opelousas General Hospital as Personnel Director, Unemployment Compensation Control Systems as a Hearing Officer and was recently employed by Evangeline Downs Race Track and Casino.
He enjoyed golfing, cooking, watching football, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Sharon Beadle Smith of Opelousas two daughters, Brandi S. Zeringue and her husband, Joey of Opelousas and Brittani S. Reddoch and her husband, Jeffrey of Lafayette four grandchildren, Connor Zeringue, and Jeffrey, Benjamin, and Julianne Reddoch sisterinlaw, Shelia Beadle Fontenot and her husband, Dwight of Youngsville two nieces, Nancy F. Soileau of Opelousas and Natalie F. Stout of Lafayette and two nephews, Lance and Thomas Fontenot of Opelousas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ruth and John F. Smith.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Day, Dwight Fontenot, Thomas Fontenot, Jeffrey Reddoch, Jeffrey Reddoch III, and Joey Zeringue.
The family requests that visitation be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, from 5 p.m.9 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Thursday, visitation will continue in the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 1:30 pm. A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the family to help defray medical and funeral expenses.
