Opelousas Funeral services for Mr. James Clifford Flop Satterley, age 70, will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Sibille Funeral Home Chapel in Opelousas with visitation from 9 a.m. till the time of the services the same day.
Mr. Satterley was born in Palmetto, LA, and later became a lifelong resident of Opelousas and Carencro area. He died on Friday, March 4, 2011, in Lafayette.
He joined the U. S. Army in 1958 and was trained as a paramedic. During the time of his enlistment, he also held several titles and won many trophies as a featherweight boxer.
After his discharge, he returned home and became a pipeline welderfitter for many years. He participated in the construction of the Alaskan Pipeline in the 60s. He loved spending time outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent several years shrimping in the Gulf. He rode motorcycles all of his life and in later years enjoyed going on trail rides with his mules and wagons loaded down with his family and friends, along with music and dancing. He will be long remembered for his cooking, card playing, and colorful storytelling.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Rita Pepitone Satterley of Carencro one son, Stacy James Satterley of Lafayette one daughter, Shelley Marie Satterley of Lafayette one adopted son, Vance Branson of Houma one adopted daughter, Rene Lee Prejean of Houma one sister, Victoria Satterley Weinstein and husband, Morris of Opelousas one granddaughter, Harley Danielle Satterley of Lafayette and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John David Satterley and Bessie Hilliard Satterley and his grandparents, Grover Cleveland Hilliard and Simionese Bazar Hilliard.
