Opelousas a Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday November 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. for Jacquelyn Jackie Sharp Griffin, in our Lady of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Msgr. Keith DeRouen will celebrate the Mass. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery. She entered this life in Houston, Texas on December 9th 1942. She departed this life on November 17, 2011, in Opelousas, La. with her family present, at her home, after a long battle with cancer.
She was raised in Opelousas and graduated from Opelousas High School in 1960. She was a resident of Roswell N.M. for 4 years, where two of her 3 children were born .Her 3rd child was born here upon her return to Opelousas, she got involved in the local community and raising her family. She worked for St. Landry Bank for many years as an Administrative Assistant. She completed banking courses at U.L. She treasured the friends she made while working at the bank and she loved helping people. She later sold Health Insurance for a few years, then went to work at Opelousas General Health System as Director of Volunteer Service, and Senior Program Director in 1992. Seven years later she accepted the position of Manager of the Hospital Gift Shop. She joined many business organizations and became very involved in different charitable organization. She joined Rotary Sunrise and became one of the first female Rotarian in District 6200, she later served as the 1st female club president in District 6200. She served as a Board Member of the United Way of St. Landry Parish, and also of the St. Landry Parish Senior Companions program. She spent 17 years at O.G.H.S. and loved her job, as well as the people who worked there.
She loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, family and many friends. She enjoyed cooking, being on the computer, traveling, gardening, decorating sitting outside on the patio, going out to eat with friends. She was so happy when the whole family got together to visit or to travel. She was also a member of the Our Lady Queen of Angels Altar Society and Bereavement Committee Catholic Daughters of American. The Elks Auxilliary, The Bourre Group, the Wednesday Come Lord Jesus Bible Study, and the Monday Rosary group. Her husband Richard and their children and grandchildren and many special friends were the most important part of her life. They were all very special and loving caregivers during her illness.
In 2000, she reconnected with a group of friends who were O.H.S. graduates in 1960. These 10 ladies got together as often as possible and traveled together. They became a very big part of her life. They were like family, always supportive. They became Gods Special Angels during her illness, always checking, always helpful always with a story, always comforting, and always cooking, The family is so thankful for these ladies.
Jackie was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Helen Cormier Sharp, her grandparents, J.C. and Alida Breaux Cormier, all of Opelousas and Leonard and Elizabeth Spence Sharp of Crockett, Texas her sisterinlaw Norma Ortego Sharp of Lafayette, and an infant brother Paul Andrew Sharp.
She is survived by her loving husband of 16 years, Richard Lee Griffin, her three children, Cynthia Nezat Vidrine and husband Tony of Leonville, Brad Nezat and his wife Dena of Prarieville, and Steven Nezat of Sunset, also daughter Mary Louise Bonadona and son Richard Kuntz and his wife Gabby all of New Orleans, her brother J.C. Sharp and Wanda Simoneaux, of Lafayette, her grandchildren, Mandi Vidrine, Chelesa Meliet, Carmin Nezat, Nick Vidrine, Amber Nezat, Samuel Nezat, Katie Kuntz, Alexa Bonadona, Joey Bonadona, Rebecca Kuntz, and Elizabeth Kuntz, and one greatgrandchild Alexiz Meliet, also her niece and Godchild Jeannene Sharp Duhon, also her loving, spoiled fat cat, Gary Gilbert. She also leaves behind very special friends, Linda Cornette, Jackie Vidrine, Margaret Quebedeaux, Valerie Chachere, and Sue Carmichael.
The family would like to give a special word of appreciation to Dr. Karen Roden, to Hospice of Acadiana nurses Beth, Donnie and Rose whom all took such wonderful care of her.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Monday, November 21, 2011, from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
A Rosary service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home prayed by Sammy Diesi and her special Rosary group.
