Opelousas-A Mass of Christian Burial for Irma Lavergne Quirk will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2016, at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Opelousas. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park. The Readings will be done by Jessika Brasseaux and Kelsi Stringer. Ani Brasseaux, Joe Brasseaux, Judy Sonnier, and Lynne Barry will present the gifts during the Mass.
Irma was a native of Sunset and a longtime resident of Opelousas. She was currently residing in Carencro, LA. She passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at her home at the age of 94.
Irma was born in Sunset, LA to Joseph D. Lavergne and Louise Sibille Lavergne. She graduated from Sunset High School, received her B. A. Degree from College of Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, and received her Master's Degree of Education from LSU. She was a public school teacher for 34 years where she taught at Eunice Elementary, Paul Pavy Elementary, Market Street Elementary, and Opelousas Junior High. She was a member of L. T. A., St. Landry Teachers' Association, St. Landry Classroom Teachers' Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma International Honor Society for Women Educators. She was also a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church where she served on the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America. She also gave her time and love while doing 2000 hours of volunteer service as a Pink Lady at Doctor's Hospital of Opelousas.
She enjoyed cooking for her family, playing Bridge with friends, reading, and gardening. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan Quirk Stringer and husband, Mark of Carencro; brothers, Carrol Lavergne of Lewisburg; and Kenneth Lavergne of Opelousas; sister, Elizabeth Lavergne Crump of LaPlace; three grandchildren, Jessika D. Brasseaux and husband, Ryan of New Haven, CT; Erik A. Ducharme and companion, Alexis Blaise of San Antonio, TX; and Kelsi A. Stringer of Carencro; step grandchildren, Carey S. Hotard and husband, Richard of Lafayette; Tracy S. Broussard and husband, Doug of Broussard; and Bryan Stringer and wife, Anna of Lafayette; two greatgrandchildren, Anne Elise "Ani" Brasseaux of New Haven, CT; and Joseph Emile Brasseaux of New Haven, CT; six step greatgrandchildren, and a special friend who was also her caregiver, Elizabeth Lewis of Sunset.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Quirk; her son, Frank Keith Quirk; her daughter, Alice Anne Quirk; her parents, Joseph D. Lavergne and Louise Sibille Lavergne; her brothers, L. J. Lavergne, Bernard Lavergne, and Eugene Lavergne; and sisters, Lillian Lavergne Barry and Roslyn Lavergne Soileau.
Pallbearers will be Erik Ducharme, Ryan Brasseaux, David Barry, Joe Lavergne, Vaughn Lavergne, Ken Lavergne, Jr., Scott Sonnier, and Ricky Soileau. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Ken Quirk, Noel Mitchell, and Joe Brasseaux.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Friday, visitation will continue from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening in the funeral home.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Prompt Succor Nursing Home of Opelousas, especially to CNA Melissa; and the staff of Hospice Compassus, especially to Nurse Jill and CNA Gwen.
