Opelousas Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Hollier Moise, age 96, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2006, in the Louisiana Memorial United Methodist Church and burial will follow in the Myrtle Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Irene Hollier Moise, 96, passed away September 27, 2006, at 2:45 p.m. in the Prompt Succor Nursing Home. She was a native of Opelousas and a lifelong resident. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Mrs. Moise is best remembered as Miss Irene by many in the community who were her kindergarten students. Miss Irene organized a kindergarten in her home in Opelousas in 1947, which met for18 years. Annual highlights that every student recalls include the excursions to Eunice on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, outings to catch crawfish, and wagon and mule rides in a large open wagon. Graduation exercises are still remembered, as each student was required to memorize and recite poetry, all of which took place in formal attire at the Opelousas Civic Center. Prior to opening the kindergarten, she taught math and English in Eunice and Port Barre for several years.

Irene Hollier graduated with honors from Louisiana State University in 1930 with a B.A. degree in Mathematics and English education. Honors recognition included membership in Mu Sigma Rho, LSUs only honorary scholastic fraternity at that time. At LSU, Miss Hollier was elected to the Co-ed Honor Council and the Co-ed Executive Council, and she helped collect nickels to purchase the first Mike the Tiger mascot.

A patriot and civic minded lady, Mrs. Moise was a Red Cross Volunteer during World War II and an active member and officer of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as the 25th president of the Opelousas Womens Club, which her mother had served as one of its organizers and as its first president. The Womens Club organized and operated a library in Opelousas for 50 years, and Mrs. Moise led the effort to construct the womens clubhouse that became a permanent home for their library until it eventually became the Opelousas Public Library.

Irene and E.A. Pappy Moise were active in the Methodist Church, serving in countless ways over 85 years of membership. Mrs. Moise was made a Life Member of the Womens Society for Christian Service in 1952. She was the oldest living member of record of the Louisiana Memorial United Methodist Church, as well as its oldest living member.
