Irene, a lifelong resident of Port Barre entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 23, at the age 88, surrounded by her loving family. Irene never sat still. She worked multiple jobs as a cook and waitress at Indian Hills Country Club and Susie’s home cooking for many years. Prior to that she along with her husband owned and operated Roy’s restaurant in Port Barre. She also catered weddings, parties, and Mardi Gras balls. Every Sunday her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren gathered at her home for a home cooked meal which she prepared with love. She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, making homemade bread, picking pecans, and making pepper jelly. Irene was the first woman elected to the Port Barre town council. She also served as President and then Vice President of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary unit 334, where she was a member for over 50 years. Irene was a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Port Barre.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 54 years, John Douglas Bergeron; 3 daughters, Gina Hagan and husband, Andy, Susan McClelland and husband, Thomas (Tommy), and Debbie Olivier, all of Port Barre; 1 son, Billy Ozenne and wife, Pam of Lake Charles; 5 grandchildren, Abby Hagan Mann (Justin), Allison Hagan, Ciji Guyre Cooper (Matt), Shelby Olivier Artigue (Jamin), and Brent Ozenne (Lisa); 6 great grandchildren, Connor and Caleb Ozenne, Cason, Camin, and Collins Cooper and Loretta Grace Mann. She was Blessed with very special friends who will also mourn her passing.
Irene was the last surviving child out of 11 children. She is now reunited with her parents and all of her siblings again. What a beautiful reunion it must be. She is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Nora Stoute; her brothers, Collins, Frederick, Evan, Merrick, and Albert Stoute; 5 sisters, Lena Lacomb, Edna Devillier, Versie Bergeron, Lelia Aymond and Hazel Chustz.
