Gudmundur Junior Erlingson

Opelousas- Funeral Services for Gudmundur Junior Erlingson, age 78, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2009, in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel of Opelousas. Private Interment will follow the service.

Fr. Pete Smith of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany will conduct the service.

Gudmundur Junior Erlingson 78 years old, a resident of Opelousas, Louisiana, born 7th of April 1931, to Erlingur Gudmundsson and Gudlaug Jonsdottir in Galtastader, Iceland, passed away on December 2nd 2009.

Gudmundur mirgrated to the United States in 1951 to attend Washington State University on scholarship. He married Virginia Owens February 15th 1957 a resident of Nowata, Oklahoma. Virginia and Gudmundur then moved to Opelousas, at which time, Gudmundur started working with Talton Tiny Turner at Louisiana Truck Brokerage. Later in life, Gudmundur worked for Al Robichaux at the Lafayette Union 76 Truck Stop. After retirement, Gudmundur enjoyed a position as an Honorary Professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where in conjunction with Dr. Bryant Bachmann, he taught Old Norse, translated and published six old Icelandic Sagas into English. Gudmundur loved wood working, fishing, and touring the United States with his wife and children as well as traveling often to Iceland, Norway and Northern Europe to visit family and friends.

Gudmundur is survived by his sister Arndis Erlingsdottir, brothers Sigurjon Erlingsson and, Arni Erlingsson all resident of Selfoss, Iceland. Survivors also include his wife, Virginia Erlingson, his children, Gretchen Erlingson a resident of Opelousas, Mary Erlingson married to Michael Simon, residents of Baton Rouge, and Eric Erlingsson married to Kjersti Botnen, residents of Oslo, Norway; his grandchildren, Alyce Deshotels, Alexander Simon, Kathryn Brooke Simon, Gabriel Simon, Elias Erlingsson, and Emma Erlingsson. He is preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Stulka Erlingsdottir and Rannveig Erlingsdottir.

Gudmundur was a loving husband, father, and Afi. Gudmundur will be mourned by his family and many friends. He is deeply missed.

Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas on Friday, December 4, 2009 from 3:00p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m.
