Gerrit P. Ryder
Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, in the Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Opelousas for Gerrit P. Ryder. Msgr. Keith DeRouen will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas.
Gerrit was a native and a longtime resident of Opelousas. He passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Opelousas General Health System, at the age of 39.
Gerrit proudly served in the U. S. Navy for eight years and was involved in the rescue of the USS Cole Naval Ship. Gerrit served his Country during the Operation Enduring Freedom War; Gerrit trained with the Navy Seals in Coronado, he became a Surface Rescue Swimmer and also an Informational Technician. Gerrit enjoyed boxing, Cross fit, track and field events and anything that offered a physical challenge. Gerrit was an artist when it came to tattooing. Gerrit was a member of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council # 11270. He is going to be missed by all that knew and loved him.
Survivors include his parents, Gordon and Brenda Ryder of Opelousas; brothers, Brent and wife Alyce Hebert Ryder of Leonville, Bart and wife Kristin Cockerham Ryder of Lafayette; four nieces, one nephew and his godchild Isabella Ryder; aunt, Ellen Ryder of Baton Rouge, Debbie Q Soileau and husband Felton of Sunset; uncle, Bobby Quebedeaux of New Orleans.
Gerrit was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, J. Gordon and Nancy Hollier Ryder and maternal grandparents, Allen and Dorothy Dupre Quebedeaux.
The visitation will begin on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening in the funeral home. On Wednesday a Rosary and Eulogy for Gerrit will be held from 12:00 pm. until time of service at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church.
