Gerald Chachere, Sr.

Opelousas-A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Gerald L. Chachere, Sr. will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2015, in Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park with Rev. Msgr. Keith J. DeRouen as the celebrant.
Mr. Chachere passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2015, at the St. Landry Extended Care Hospital in Opelousas at the age of 88.
Mr. Chachere was a native and resident of Opelousas. He graduated from Opelousas High School in 1943. He entered into the United States Navy in 1945 and served in World War II and the Korean War. After returning to Opelousas, he worked at Planters Bank eventually becoming a loan officer and Senior Vice President. He retired from First National Bank in 1990. He was a member of Elks Lodge 1048 and served as Exalted Ruler. He was also a past president of Kiwanis Club. Mr. Chachere was a member of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Roma Baquet Chachere of Opelousas; one daughter, Patricia Chachere Boyd and husband, William K. Boyd of Opelousas; two sons, Dr. Gerald L. Chachere, Jr. and wife, Mary of Opelousas; and John Stephen Chachere and wife, Denise of St. Louis, MO; 7 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Bettye Chachere Mack of San Antonio, TX; two brothers, Shirley L. Chachere of Opelousas; and James H. Chachere and wife, Hilda of Harvey; sister-in-law, Bonnie Baquet Wyble of Opelousas; and Dolly Chachere of Lafayette. Mr. Chachere is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Chachere was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Haw Chachere and A. Ryan Chachere; as well as, brothers, Huey P. Chachere, Ryan E. Chachere, and Charles R. Chachere.
Pallbearers will be Adam W. Chachere, Justin W. Boyd, Jonathan A. Boyd, Brody C. Thompson, Jeffrey C. Bulliard, and Ryan E. Chachere II. Honorary pallbearers will be Ike Chachere, James H. Chachere, Shirley L. Chachere, A. E. "Manny" Veltin, and William Robert.
Visiting hours will be held in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. with Deacon Sammy Diesi. On Thursday, the funeral home will reopen at 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Mr. Chachere's honor to the Opelousas Catholic School.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Gary Blanchard, Dr. Hunt deBlanc, and Dr. Gabriela Pichardo, and to the staff of Opelousas General Health System and St. Landry Extended Care Hospital of Opelousas for their wonderful medical care.
